Our own roofs, photographed.

18 photographs of our own work. It opens with the five stages of a re-roof, then everything else — chimneys, flat roofs, repairs. Every photograph on this page is a job we did.

The stages, then the rest

01Slate re-roof

01How a re-roof goes

Scaffold goes up

Nobody works off a ladder. The scaffold is up before a tile moves, and it comes down when the job is signed off.

Do I need scaffolding?

01 — Pitched roofs

Slate and tile, hooked and nailed.

The covering is the part everyone sees, and the part that has to survive forty winters. These are ours.

Dry ridge installation

A dry ridge system: mechanically fixed, so it does not depend on mortar staying sound.

Natural slate hooked and nailed, with a clay ridge bedded over it.

02 — Chimneys

Stacks rebuilt and re-leaded.

Rebuilt stack by stack, with new pots and new lead, on the part of the roof that takes the most weather.

New pots bedded and flaunched, off the scaffold that went up for the roof.

03 — Flat roofs

Fibreglass, laid in one piece.

04 — Repairs, and turning up

Verges, ridges and slipped slates.

A verge, a ridge, a slipped slate. If a repair will do we say so — and the van outside is the same one either way.
